o Mountain View-Based Lytro Raises $40 Million in New Funding Round

Mountain View, Calif. -- Lytro, the Mountain View-based developer of a consumer light field camera that offers photographic capabilities such as focusing a picture after it's taken and changing the perspective, said on Wednesday it has raised $40 million in a new round of funding. New investor North Bridge Venture Partners and previous backers Andreessen Horowitz, New Enterprise Associates (NEA) and Greylock Partners took part in the round. Jonathan Heiliger, a partner at North Bridge, will join the company's board of directors. "This additional funding will help fuel Lytro's continued growth and the expansion of light field photography with new products and audiences," said CEO Jason Rosenthal. Lytro began shipping its cameras in early 2012.

o San Francisco-Based Apartment List Lands $15 Million in First Round

San Francisco -- Apartment List, the San Francisco-based operator of an apartment search engine, said on Wednesday it has landed $15 million in its first round of funding, led by Matrix Partners. The company plans to use the funds to build out its service, particularly its mobile capabilities. It eventually hopes to digitize the entire rental process, allowing users to contact landlords, sign contracts and pay rent all directly through its mobile app. Launched in 2011, Apartment List said it has curated more listings than its competitors in 57 of the top 100 rental markets. The company, which has 55 employees, said it consolidates properties from hundreds of well-known listing services. Apartment List acquired RentAdvisor in October, adding more than 20,000 reviews and ratings to its listings.

o Sunnyvale-Based Yahoo to Begin Encrypting All User Data

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Responding to recent reports about the National Security Agency (NSA) secretly tracking the data of Internet users, Sunnyvale-based Yahoo said it plans to begin encrypting all of its user data. "There is nothing more important to us than protecting our users' privacy," wrote CEO Marissa Mayer in a blog post. Yahoo recently had announced plans to begin encrypting its web mail service by Jan. 8. "Today we are announcing that we will extend that effort across all Yahoo products," wrote Mayer. Specifically, Yahoo said it will begin encrypting all information that moves between its data centers, as well as offer users an option to encrypt all data to and from the company by the end of March. It also plans to work with international email partners to better protect co-branded email accounts.
