o San Jose-Based Cisco to Acquire CliQr Technologies for $260 Million

San Jose, Calif. -- Cisco Systems, the San Jose-based networking giant, said on Tuesday it will pay $260 million to acquire CliQr Technologies, developer of a platform designed to help users manage the entire application lifecycle across hybrid IT environments. The deal is expected to close in the third quarter, when the CliQr team will join Cisco's Insieme business, reporting to Prem Jain, its senior vice president and general manager. Cisco said the acquisition will help customers simplify and accelerate their private, public and hybrid cloud deployments. o Mountain View-Based Veritas Names Several Key Executives

Mountain View, Calif. -- Just one month after re-launching as a newly independent company, Veritas Technologies, the Mountain View-based information management company sold earlier this year by Symantec, on Tuesday named Mick Lopez as its new chief financial officer (CFO) and George Haddad as its chief human resources officer. Lopez most recently served as the CFO of Harris Corp., and earlier led corporate strategy, operations and mergers and acquisitions for Aricent, Cisco and IBM. Haddad most recently was the senior vice president of HR at Concentrix, and previously held HR executive roles at Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Verisign. In addition, Veritas also named Matt Cain to the newly created role of president of worldwide field operations. Cain had served as the company's chief product officer, a role that will now be taken over by Ana Pinczuk, the former senior vice president and general manager of Veritas' Backup and Recovery business. "In less than thirty days since separation, we've established the team and organizational structure that will bring the right balance of innovation and business expertise to propel our business forward," said CEO Bill Coleman. Veritas also has named company founder and former chairman and CEO, Mark Leslie, as a board advisor.

o N.Y. Judge Rules Government Can't Force Apple to Unlock iPhone

New York -- In a ruling that could have major reverberations in the federal government's case against Cupertino-based Apple, a federal judge in New York on Monday sided with Apple in a similar case, dying the Department of Justice's request for a court order that would've forced the company to unlock the iPhone of a suspected drug dealer. The news came on the eve of a Congressional hearing Tuesday about whether Apple should be forced to unlock the iPhone of one of the suspected shooters in December's San Bernardino terrorist attack. In the New York case, Magistrate Judge James Orenstein rejected prosecutors' claims that a 227-year-old law, known as the All Writs Act, compelled Apple to cooperate with the government. "The implications of the government's position are so far-reaching -- both in terms of what it would allow today and what it implies about Congressional intent in 1789 -- as to produce impermissibly absurd results," said Orenstein.
